In Concert: School of Seven Bells – Spirituality in the Name of the Seven

By Andreas Bubrowski (the German original of the article hm.png).
Translation into English by Danielle Pann.

The songs on the Album ALPINISMS, the first of the New York Band School of Seven Bells, have received accolades from the Süddeutsche Zeitung including “light as a breeze” and “crystal clear”. The online editorial named ALPINISMS as the Album of the Year in 2008 hm.png. Without hesitation Muenster was the next destination of travel – their next scheduled gig on the current EU-tour. Especially since the concert was to be held the SEVENTH of March and the mode of transport was the regional (R7) train.

Would the trio be able to live up to the expectations of performing as well live as under “laboratory conditions”: perfection in arrangement, bewitching ranges of tone and alternative electric sound that that chills one to the bone?

It was good to have previously heard the band unplugged on YouTube, otherwise it would have been very difficult to appreciate the INSIDE quality of the music played in a small club with living room acoustics. It’s hard to imagine how the musicians – who were on their way from Brooklyn to Paris, stopping in Munich – happened to land in the province of Westphalia.

The three gentle, beautiful figures didn’t seem to consent to this or contest this. Although the exceptional vocal talents of Claudia (Keyboard) und Alejandra Deheza (Guitar) was left to the imagination, this did not interrupt the magic of the track. Newcomer bands are often known for minor imperfections. Even the most established stars such as Coldplay strike the wrong chord on their instruments.

Live at Lime with School of Seven Bells – WHITE ELEPHANT COAT

This is not the case with the School of Seven Bells. The sheer perfection of their pieces – in the studio as well as live – is breathtakingly flawless. Then, take the lyrics flavoured with subtle allegories which seem to lay somewhere between Zen-Koan and the wisdom of the Indian scripture. It all leaves one with the impression that the sound comes from somewhere out of this world – it was simply SPIRITUAL.

It first became apparent at the end of the show that Claudia, Benjamin Curtis und Alejandra are at the beginning of what is sure to be a very successful career. Their repertoire is primarily derived from their album ALPINISMS. After an hour an a half the show was over. The couple dozen in the audience were just getting into things and had to settle for what they got. This is also spiritual: to stop eating before one is full.

School Of Seven Bells – Sempiternal

Whether the spiritual note in the music was only presumed, what this exactly has to do with the SEVEN BELLS and whether one can learn in the SCHOOL “of Seven Bells” are all questions which will be answered in the upcoming interview with this group.
